Claudia Sheinbaum Reiterates No Negotiation with Cartels

The Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, rejected the proposal by ruling party deputy Manuel Espino to negotiate with organized crime to pacify the country. During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum stated: "We are not going to negotiate with criminals, we will continue building peace, addressing the causes, and with zero impunity."

Deputy Espino proposed the creation of a National Commission for Pacification and National Reconciliation to dialogue with drug cartels in Mexico. His proposal included establishing agreements with the cartels to achieve "social justice" and end the violence in the country, without implying impunity or forgiveness for the crimes committed.

Although this initiative has already been presented to the Political Coordination Board of the Chamber of Deputies during the government of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, it was unsuccessful. Espino had put forth a similar proposal in 2022, which did not advance.

Sheinbaum reiterated that her administration will not enter into any type of negotiation with criminal groups and will continue working on building peace in Mexico. These statements come in a context of increasing violence in states like Sinaloa, which is currently facing an intensification of the struggle between factions within drug trafficking.
